Krašić District

Krašić DistrictThe Krašić district encompasses 69.45 km2 and 33 villages with 3,199 inhabitants in 2001. Krašić is the center of the district and is located 16 km west of Jastrebarsko. It is surrounded with a wide fertile valley of the river Kupčina, the hills of Prigorje with oak forests and vineyards, wooden houses and old farmyards, called the Valley of Peace. Krašić is famous for the late Zagreb archbishop, cardinal Alojzije Stepinec, who was born here, spent his childhood, served his first mass and spent his last years of life in house arrest, after serving a political sentence in the Lepoglava prison (from 1951 to 1960). Therefore, many people visit his Memorial Home. On the occasion of the 100 years of his birth, in 1988, a monument was erected on the square in front of the Parish Church of the Holy Trinity. Three kilometers north-east from Krašić, there is the Pribić village, the birthplace of the late cardinal Franjo Kuharić. There is the Parish Church of St. Sixto from the 10th century, the Baroque castle of the Greek-Catholic bishops in Strmec and the Neo-Byzantine church on the island in the castle's fish pond. In the northern part of the Krašić district there is the Slapnica stream with a canyon of exceptional beauty with several waterfalls, caves and karst springs. In Mrkopolje, nearby Krašić, there is the Golf & Country Club "Dolina kardinala" with a 18-hole competition course with 18 holes and a 9-hole family course, the golf academy and an exercise field with a restaurant.
