The popular ancient Neanderthal from Krapina or "dedek Kajbumščak", at the Hušnjakovo location in Krapina is the most famous world site of the Neanderthal man with the richest and most varied fossil collection. It is protected as the first paleontological nature monument in Croatia. Geological and paleontological research lasted from 1899 to 1905 under supervision of the famous scientist Dragutin Gorjanović Kramberger. The layers of the cave preserved about nine hundred human fossil bones, numerous stone tools from the Paleolithic Age, as well as fossil remains of the cave bear, wolf, moose, giant deer, rhinoceros, wild cattle and other animals. The site was dated back 130,000 years. The museum's building foundations and the old exhibition once were a Kneipp spa at the beginning of the 20th century, famous for cold water therapies. The museum has a geological, paleontological and archeological collection, presents rocks and fossils found in Hrvatsko Zagorje, the origins of life on Earth and the development of humans. In the vicinity of the archeological site a new Museum of Neanderthal Man has recently been opened. Its modern architecture and multimedia presentations contribute to the dignity of one of the most famous Paleolithic sites in the world. Numerous activities and workshops present the voyage to the far past in the interesting and unforgettable way.
