Matija Skurjeni Museum was founded in 1984 with the agreement between Matija Skujeni and the Zaprešić district. The agreement was initiated by the naive artist Matija Skurjeni and Mrs. Milka Kobeščak, his long-time collaborator. The expert author of the gallery's concept, its permanent exhibition and guide is Vladimir Malekivić, the respectable art critic and the director of the Museum for Arts and Crafts in Zagreb. In Novi Dvori castle in Zaprešić the Matija Skurjeni Gallery was opened in 1987 and associated with the Open University like the Brdovec Museum. Matija Skurjeni was proclaimed the honorable citizen of Zaprešić in the same year. After her death in 2000, Mrs. Milka Kobeščak donated her collection of paintings, drawings and graphics to the town of Zaprešić and Skurjeni Gallery.
The gallery was a part of the Brdovec Museum until 2000, when the Ministry of Culture approved that the Matija Skurjeni Gallery becomes Matija Skurjeni Museum, with a permanent exhibition (encompassing the entire opus, from his earliest work to the last artwork) and a museum guide. The museum presents the most important work by Matija Skurjeni: paintings, oils, drawings and graphics.
