The home manufacture of wooden toys and instruments is located in Hrvatsko Zagorje, the district of Marija Bistrica, in a small village of Laz Stubički. Dragutin Kunić, the master of wooden toys, added his skills to his father-in-law's fifty-year tradition of žveglač, and has continued the tradition of producing wooden toys with his wife Marija for another 40 years. His wife Marija has developed her skills of painting wooden toys since childhood, determined to preserve the traditional value of žveglač and her village. The wood is processed, carved, painted (red, white, yellow) and decorated with folklore ornaments (white, red, green, blue).
The motives are: horses, birds, carriages, doll furniture, butterflies and instruments like flute and tamburitza. Traditional wooden toys are picturesque characteristics of the largest Croatian Marian sanctuary, Marija Bistrica, the feasts, fairs and exhibitions in Krapina-Zagorje and Zagreb counties.
Traditional folk instruments and children's wooden toys are a great joy for children and the adults love them, too. It is necessary to call ahead to organize the presentation of manufacturing wooden toys.
